![]() ![]() Mukherjee, who would turn in an even more accomplished performance in Ray’s Charulata (1964), gives Arati poise, intelligence, and the moral righteousness that make it unthinkable to root against her. Ray is one of those gifted few, extracting solid performances from his acting ensemble. Few filmmakers can take such a grounded and domestic story and wrest torrents of sympathy, disappointment, and admiration for the characters within. I write that not in disparagement, but awe. What a simple story this is, with Ray��s screenplay adapted from Narendranath Mitra’s short story “Abataranika”. ![]()
